Prom Hair Styles

For almost every teenager, prom is an incredibly special time in young-adult life. Most times, girls are looking forward to dancing with their sweetheart and if not, they are anxiously awaiting to be asked by the perfect guy. Prom is the time when teens can finally replace jeans and sweatshirts with a beautiful, elegant prom dress that will transform them for one night into a vision of the mature adults they will become. Of course, in order to do this, each teen needs the "right" dress and the "right" prom hairstyle to go with it.

Traditional prom hairstyles have been replaced by current ones and every year new styles are created. Because of this variety created in recent years, there are innumerable options for great prom hairstyles to choose from for that very special night.

Most teens tend to do their shopping for that perfect stunning dress with a friend. Also, many teens go above and beyond having nail treatments done to complement their outfit. Some really splurge having facials and other spa treatments in order to look and feel fabulous. Of course, one of the most essential elements of this process is hairstyling. The perfect gown needs a perfect hairstyle to complete the look beautifully.

Prom is the perfect time to be treated like a queen; to put yourself first and do some very special things to let the beautiful you shine! It is the ideal time to create excitement on the top of the head with a flawless prom hairstyle. Most importantly, remember that creating this look does not have to mean spending a lot of money.

There are several tips to keep in mind when trying to achieve a glamorous, million-dollar look that everyone in the room will envy:
Although ponytails are an every-day look, they are actually perfect for prom as well if done right. Secure the hair in a high ponytail, pulling a few strands out. This creates a soft yet spiky look. Use a wax-based hair product or a heavy duty hairspray to work the strands so they stick out exactly the way you want them to. Then, use a beaded ponytail holder to make the do fancy and glamorous.

If sticking to a single ponytail, gemmed clasps or pins can be used to create a separated look with multiple strands. This is an ideal prom hairstyle for a chic and elegant look.

Another option for a ponytail-based hairstyle is to separate the ponytail into two sections. Then each section is twisted individually into random knots. The knots created can then be pinned to the head using crystal hairpins or shortsticks. A sassier look can be achieved by simply pulling a few strands out of each knot and using hairspray to keep them in place.

Use a ribbon in a matching color to the prom dress to accentuate a ponytail look. Start with a ponytail in the midsection of the head. Then weave the chosen ribbon through the hair to achieve a crisscross effect. If a friend or family member is available to help and you have two sets of hands, some very elegant designs can be achieved.

Use large sized rollers to create luscious curls and bounce to the ponytail. In order to really make the ponytail glisten and shine, use a spritz or spray. One fun way to dress it up is to use glitter spray which will make the hair sparkle.

Flowers of any kind are a beautiful way to enhance any hairstyle. These flowers can be natural and real or silk and synthetic. They can then be braided into a ponytail or simply placed behind one ear for a soft, feminine touch. Actress, Drew Barrymore, uses flowers as her signature and wears them perfectly to enhance her hairstyles.

If the hair is short close to the prom date, it might be time for a special treat! Hair extensions are a great way to really spice it up and create a drastically different prom hairstyle for the special night. Extensions are temporary but can be worn for several weeks after the event and then taken out.

Along with using color, flowers and jewels with prom hairstyles, hair stencils have become a very popular styling technique. Stencils create designs using temporary paint or glitter. They allow for a formal look and can also create the perfect trendy, funky look.

Although stencils are more effective with short hair, they are not limited to shorter hairstyles as they can be used with a variety of hair lengths. Regardless of length, stencils are sure to create a wonderfully unique design; no one else at the prom will have the same do as you! This prom hairstyle depends on individuality, creativity, and imagination. It is important to allow time for a few practice rounds if this will be the first time stencils are used.

The first step is to create the pattern with cardboard or poster board. This ensures that the design will be consistent and neat. Another idea is to visit a local craft or hobby store and purchase a pre-made stencil that appeals to you. If this is the first time stencils have been used, remember to start small and simple as this will create the best look for the first time. All of this can be done alone but it is much easier and a lot more fun to do it with a friend!

After the design is chosen, shampoo the hair and rinse with a deep penetrating conditioner. In order to achieve the best results, it is wise to buy a leave-in conditioner that specifically provides protection against gel, glitter and color. After this, blow dry the hair until it is completely straight. Once straightened, the stencil is placed directly onto the part of the hair it is designed to cover. A helping hand during this step might be necessary. When the desired position is achieved, apply the glitter and color to the hair.

After the stencil is applied and the color or glitter has set, use the fingers to very carefully arrange the hair. Most importantly, use a firm holding spray so that the hair will stay in place for your magnificent night at the dance!

When the prom hairstyle is perfectly accomplished, make sure to choose the right make-up that will complement and accentuate the look. If applying make-up without assistance, make sure to have full control. If prior make-up experience is minimal, it might be a wise decision to turn to a professional make-up artist or beautician. Allison Saunders is a prime example of a professional to learn from as she reveals her Hollywood make-over secrets that will keep the heads turning all night long.
